Julie Ferguson brings a grounded yet high-energy approach to MBA admissions coaching. With over 14 years of experience, she has worked in both US and international MBA contexts, including four years as Senior Associate Director of Admissions at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and a role supporting admissions and outreach at The Lauder Institute at Wharton.

At Booth, Julie led admissions events, conducted interviews, liaised with prospective students, and managed marketing communications. Her inside knowledge of how admissions teams operate allows her to offer highly strategic, school-specific advice to each of her clients.

Julie holds dual degrees in Advertising and Spanish from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and completed a Strategic Marketing Management course through Chicago Booth’s Executive Education program.

Born and raised in Brazil to Scottish parents, Julie is fluent in Portuguese and Spanish, and maintains her language skills through travel. She’s equally at home on a Mediterranean beach with a novel or four-wheeling up a mountain trail. A 14-year yoga instructor and avid dog lover, Julie regularly fosters pups from Mexico – naming them after rock stars like Axel Rose and Stevie Nicks.

Q&A with Julie

What’s your top piece of advice for admissions candidates?

Instead of trying to guess what an admissions committee is looking for in their applicant pool, focus on what makes you uniquely suited to become a part of that school’s MBA community. Hone in on what makes you unique and sets you apart from your peers. This requires quite a bit of introspection, as sometimes that distinctive quality is not always the most obvious!

What’s your coaching superpower?

As an advanced yoga practitioner, I have been trained to be open to not only receiving feedback, but also delivering feedback in a direct and constructive manner. I use this training to help my clients through the application preparation process, to help them dig below the surface so that their application is an authentic reflection of who they are. I’ve also been known to guide my clients through breathing exercises to help them in stressful situations (admissions interview, anyone?)!
